DoorDash Taxes: Mileage Deductions and Records to Keep

A big delivery payout looks good on the phone. It is not the same as money you can spend after vehicle costs and taxes. Keep the earnings report, but keep the mileage and receipts too.

Correction, September 9, 2026: the original article incorrectly gave the 2024 business mileage rate as 65.5 cents. It was 67 cents. The vehicle-method and home-office explanations below have also been corrected using IRS guidance. This is a U.S. federal overview, not personalized tax advice; a qualified tax preparer can check your circumstances and state requirements.

Start with income, even without a 1099

The IRS gig economy tax center says gig income must be reported even when no information form arrives. Keep records across every app you work on, rather than assuming one platform’s statement captures everything.

The IRS says $400 or more in net self-employment earnings creates a filing requirement. That is not a blanket tax-free allowance below $400. Independent contractors may also need estimated payments during the year. If you have an employee job, additional paycheck withholding may be an option. Use the IRS gig-worker filing and payment guide to review the process.

Use the mileage rate for when you drove

The IRS rate can change between years and within a year. Its business mileage table, checked September 9, 2026, lists:

Driving period Business rate per mile
2024 67 cents
2025 70 cents
January 1 to June 30, 2026 72.5 cents
July 1 to December 31, 2026 76 cents

The midyear change is also documented in IRS Announcement 2026-11. Separate your 2026 mileage by period.

Example: 1,000 eligible business miles in the first half of 2026 plus 1,000 in the second half produces a $1,485 mileage deduction: $725 + $760. That is a deduction, not a $1,485 payment or guaranteed reduction in your tax bill.

Mileage and actual vehicle expenses are different methods

Under the actual-expense method, business use determines the deductible share of eligible vehicle costs. For example, 6,000 business miles out of 10,000 total miles is 60% business use, not 60% of the time you owned the car.

Do not add the same gas, maintenance and depreciation costs on top of the standard mileage deduction. Eligible business parking and tolls can be separate.

For an owned car, choosing standard mileage in its first business-use year preserves the possibility of using that method later. Other eligibility and depreciation restrictions apply. If you choose standard mileage for a leased car, the IRS requires it throughout the lease, including renewals. My old statement that using actual expenses always locks every driver into that method was too broad. Review IRS Topic 510 before choosing or changing methods.

Are all the miles in a delivery shift deductible?

No. Tracking the cost of a shift and calculating a tax deduction are different tasks. A drive can cost you time and fuel without qualifying as deductible business travel.

IRS Publication 463 treats ordinary travel between home and a main or regular workplace as personal commuting. Its examples also address first and last business contacts when you have no regular office, and an exception for a qualifying home office that is your principal place of business. Turning on a delivery app is not, by itself, proof that every mile qualifies.

Separate personal errands from delivery travel. Record the date, destination, business purpose and distance, and identify trips between home and the work area for review. If you use multiple apps on one trip, do not count the same miles twice.

Have your preparer resolve uncertain first-trip, last-trip and home-office situations using your actual work pattern. IRS guidance checked September 10, 2026.

A kitchen table is not automatically a home office

Doing app paperwork at home does not by itself qualify the space. For the usual home-office claim, exclusive and regular business use matters, along with a qualifying business-use test. Administrative work can meet the principal-place-of-business test when the other requirements apply and there is no other fixed location for substantial administrative or management work.

The simplified method is $5 per qualifying square foot, up to 300 square feet, subject to limits. A shared dining table used for meals fails exclusive use; a separately identified space is not automatically disqualified just because it is within a larger room. Check IRS Topic 509 rather than claiming a percentage of the whole house by guesswork.

Build a record you can actually use

  • Save each app’s income statements and your expense receipts.
  • Keep trip dates, mileage and business purpose in a consistent log.
  • Separate personal travel and flag uncertain trips for your preparer.
  • Keep total vehicle mileage so business-use calculations have a denominator.

My reported $426 Spark day includes trip estimates and 202 work miles. It illustrates why a payout alone is incomplete, not proof that every mile shown qualifies for a deduction. For the work decision before tax filing, use the delivery time-and-mileage checklist.
