How to Become a Shipt Shopper: Pay & Signup

To become a Shipt shopper, use the official shopper signup page and follow its instructions to apply through the shopper app. Check that you meet the requirements below, submit your information, then watch the app and email for Shipt’s next steps. Applications are reviewed according to local need, so submitting yours does not guarantee an immediate start.

This guide covers grocery shopping and delivery, with links to the separate package-driver opportunity. Start with the requirements checklist or jump to how to apply. My October 2024 experience appears later in the guide.

Application and payment information checked September 9, 2026. The original shopper experience below was published in October 2024.

Shipt shopper requirements

Before applying, check these requirements on Shipt’s official signup page:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a valid mailing address, U.S. driver’s license and Social Security number.
  • Have auto insurance and a reliable, working vehicle.
  • Be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Have a compatible smartphone with the updated shopper app.

Signup requirements checked September 10, 2026. Confirm current app compatibility before applying.

How to apply and what happens next

  1. Start with the official signup. Use the shopper link above and follow its app instructions.
  2. Submit your details. Have your license, mailing address and required identification ready.
  3. Watch the app and email. Shipt reviews submissions according to local demand; there is no universal approval deadline.
  4. Complete the steps Shipt sends you. Wait for activation before planning on income from orders.

If your Shipt application gets stuck

Before submitting the same details again, check what is actually missing:

  • The form will not submit: confirm every required field is filled in. Shipt specifically says to use your state’s abbreviation.
  • You submitted but have no start date: check the shopper app and email for confirmation. Shipt says it reviews submissions according to local need; applying does not guarantee immediate activation.
  • A signup step still fails: Shipt lists [email protected] for troubleshooting. Explain which step failed, but do not post identification documents or account details in public comments.

Shipt shopper vs. package delivery driver

Both involve driving, but the work before the first drop-off is different. Choose the opportunity you actually want:

Work type What you do Official starting point
Shop & Deliver Select and purchase items in a store, then deliver them to the customer. Become a Shipt shopper
Package delivery Reserve a route, collect packages at a designated Target pickup location and deliver to multiple addresses. Become a Shipt package delivery driver

Shipt’s driver page lets you review route information and pickup locations. Check the commute to the pickup point as well as the route itself. An application page does not guarantee immediate openings.

Official pages checked September 10, 2026. The personal earnings discussed in this article concern shopping; they are not package-route pay figures. If you already shop and want package routes, use Shipt’s official guidance or support to confirm the steps for your account.

How Shipt shopper pay works

Shoppers are independent contractors paid per order, with estimated offer pay based on time and effort. Tips go to the shopper. Shipt lists weekly Friday direct deposits and, for eligible shoppers, Instant Pay access up to three times daily. Instant Pay requires agreement to Stripe Connect terms and at least one successful weekly payout. See Shipt’s payment explanation.

Offer pay is not your take-home hourly earnings. Compare the money received with all the time spent driving to the store, shopping, checking out, delivering and waiting between orders. Fuel and other operating costs reduce what you keep.

For example, an illustrative $24 order that takes 90 minutes produces $16 per hour before expenses. If you spend $4 on that trip, the remaining $20 over 90 minutes is about $13.33 per hour before taxes. These are example numbers, not a Shipt pay prediction.

Can Shipt shoppers see tips before accepting?

Shipt’s June 2026 help guidance says shoppers can see a customer’s pre-tip before claiming an order. When a customer has not added one, an estimated tip may appear instead. Read the offer carefully: an estimate is not the same as money already received. See Shipt’s explanation of pre-tips.

A practical checklist for your first shop

Ready for your first order? Follow our Shipt shopper training and first-order checklist for official learning resources, sample messages and troubleshooting steps.

  • Start with a store you know and leave extra time for checkout.
  • Check item quantities, bulky items, delivery distance and the delivery window before committing.
  • Follow the customer’s substitution preferences and the app’s instructions when something is unavailable.
  • Keep groceries organized and protect cold and fragile items.
  • Record the actual time, mileage and money received so you can judge whether the work fits your goals.

What I liked about shopping for Shipt

My original October 2024 account came down to two things: being able to choose my hours and earning around $20 to $30 an hour in my experience. I could fit the work around other commitments. Those are useful benefits, but neither tells you what an individual order will be worth.

Knowing the store and communicating about substitutions were two of the things I called out in that earlier post. They still make more sense to me than treating every offer as easy money. You are doing the shopping, not just carrying a bag from a restaurant counter.

The order has to work before you count on a bigger tip

A tip can improve a delivery. It is a shaky reason to accept one that already looks bad. Read what the offer actually shows, keep estimated tips separate from confirmed pay, and check the final amount received afterward.

The same goes for taking two orders. My older advice suggested doubling up once comfortable. The missing part was the extra shopping, sorting and driving. Two payouts do not automatically mean a better hourly result.

Two orders can mean two checkout problems

Picture this: one customer answers a substitution message right away, while the other has not replied. You still need to keep the orders separate, finish checkout and reach both doors within their delivery windows. That is the extra work to consider before treating a second payout as a quick win.

This is an example to think through, not a trip from my earnings records. Before taking two orders, check the combined item count, both delivery windows and the route. If one slow checkout would throw off the whole plan, the second order needs a closer look.

For wording you can adapt when an item is missing, use the substitution-message examples in my Shipt tips guide.

Give your first few orders an honest review

Write down when you leave for the store, when you finish the delivery, the miles you drive and what you actually receive. Include the return trip when it is part of getting back to where you can work. That is a more useful test than comparing your best payout with somebody else’s best screenshot.

If the work suits you, build from there. If it does not, compare it with my experience delivering Veho routes or my Spark delivery day. Different work can fit different parts of your day.
